The CSC project was approved in September 2006. CSC was established on 16 July 2009 by the Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology (MeitY). This project is an essential factor for National eGovernance Programme. On 31st January 2011, over 88 lakhs CCs were launched in thirty-one States and UTs.

In the year 2015, CSC 2.0 was formed. At least one CSC is anticipated in each of the 2.5 lakh Fram Panchayats. CSC 2.0 is a delivery-based service. State Wide Area Network (SWAN), e-District, State Service Delivery Gateway (SSDG), State Data Centre (SDC), and (National Optical Fiber Network (NOFN)/ BharatNet provide financial support to the CSC programme.
