Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana: How Does It Help Indian Women?
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana: How Does It Help Indian Women?
Cooking gas is a basic necessity for all. Up to the present time, many struggle for LPG gas connections in India. Only the middle and upper middle classes from the urban and semi-urban areas have access to LPG gas.
Those below the poverty line or from rural areas are yet exposed to a smoky kitchen. They are cooking their food by traditional methods. These people use things like coal, kerosene, cow dung, firewood or dry leaves, etc, which leads to serious respiratory disease.
As per the data of WHO, due to dirty cooking fuels around 5 lakh deaths are occurring in India. Not only women, but toddlers are also at tremendous risk of biomass burning as they roam around their mothers and spend a lot of time with them. Such children are exposed to vulnerable respiratory issues and breathlessness.
Thus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed the green flag to Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) to promote health among BPL households. This step of the Central Government will ensure women’s empowerment in India by promoting their fitness.

What Are The Challenges Of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana?
Implementing any scheme is not an easy task for the government. It needs immense planning and hard work. There are many challenges related to this scheme and they are:
Recognition of Poor Households
Due to inaccurate data on poor households, the allotment of gas cylinders becomes tough.
Awareness Among Beneficiaries
All the beneficiaries belong from poor backgrounds and illiterate families. So, they are little aware of the safety rules associated with the use of LPG gas.
Lack of Document
Due to inaccurate data on poor households the allotment of the gas cylinder becomes tough.
Even if the families are eligible for this scheme, they don’t have sufficient documents required for the allotment of gas connection. These documents are Aadhaar Card and Ration Card.
Limitation of LPG
In some regions of the country, LPG distribution is not possible due to law and order. People living in such areas are still disconnected from the scheme.
Maltreatment of SECC Data
Many wealthy families registered as BPL in the SECC-2011. So, it is a BIG challenge for the government to prove the authenticity of every piece of data mentioned in the SECC database.
